Able Australia pulls out of Commonwealth Home Support Programme

Not For Profit Able Australia, which is based in Victoria and has operations across the eastern states, has made the "difficult decision" to transition out of services in South East Queensland funded under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, the Active Living Program for Seniors, and emergency relief at the end of September 2024.

The decision was made due to a lack of funding and the rising costs of delivering the services, particularly for fuel and utilities, according to a statement from the organisation.

Able Australia has covered most of the $2.2 million loss the services have made since 2018. As a Not For Profit it said "we are not in a position to continue to do this".

Able has supported older Australians in Jimboomba, Ipswich, Lowood and Southport with community transport, individual and group programs, Meals on Wheels, Food Pantry, Active Living Program for seniors, as well as emergency relief programs for people who need short-term support.

The change will impact 18 staff, approximately 500 clients, and 130 volunteers.
