The cold weather continues to drive COVID-19 cases in residential aged care higher, with 2,755 resident cases recorded in the week to 25 May 2023 – nearly triple the number of cases recorded less than two months ago. There were more than 1,000 cases recorded in NSW alone last week.

Residential aged care staff cases ticked over 1,000, with nearly one in five (18%) aged care homes experiencing an outbreak.
Deaths also increased last week, with 42 deaths associated with COVID-19 recorded.
According to the Department of Health and Aged Care, only 42.9% of estimated eligible residents are fully vaccinated.
