In the week to 4 May 2023, 79 aged care residents died from COVID-19, compared with only 40 the week before. The spike in deaths follows a more than doubling of COVID-19 cases among residents in the last five weeks. In that time, resident deaths have quadrupled. Cases may have peaked, with case numbers down this week – 1,974 this week, compared with 1,984 the previous week.
