Student aged care workers deregistered after tying resident to chair

Two young aged care workers who came to Australia from Nepal on student visas in 2022 have been banned from working in healthcare after they tied an 85-year-old resident living with dementia to his chair and when he fell, left him on the floor in urine-soaked clothing.

Two young aged care workers who came to Australia on student visas have been banned from working in healthcare for two years after the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) found they posed "a risk to the health or safety of members of the public".

An HCCC investigation found the Assistants in Nursing (AINs), Megana Pandey and Supryinka Poudel, in an incident in June last year, used a bedsheet to tie an 85-year-old man living with dementia to a chair, failed to intervene when the man fell, left the man on the floor in urine-soaked clothing, and used "unreasonable force" when they pulled him across the floor by his arms.

The Commission found both AINs breached clauses of the Code of Conduct by failing to provide services in a safe and ethical manner, failing to maintain accurate, timely clinical records, and failing to practice in accordance with accepted professional standards.

Both Megana, 21, and Supryinka, 24, came to Australia from Nepal in 2022, Megana on a student visa and Supryinka on a post-graduate bridging visa.

Robert Hartnett, HCCC's Director Complaints Operations, said both AINs posed "a significant risk to the health and safety of members of the public".
