Aged care’s wish list: the reforms aged care executives are calling for

With 550 C-suite aged care and retirement living executives in attendance at last week’s LEADERS SUMMIT – and the Minister – speakers shared the reforms they would like to see to improve the sector’s financial viability and to meet growing future demand for seniors accommodation. These included:

  • Increase the cap on the minimum family home value when determining Government assistance.
  • Increase yearly and lifetime caps for contributions for the cost of care.
  • Deregulate the Basic Daily Care Fee for non-concessional residents.
  • Deferred rent from RADs to cover the cost of accommodation.
  • Increase funding for staff pay and benefits.
  • Improve education to make aged care a desirable career option.
  • Fast track visa applications for aged care workers.
  • Funding to directly correlate to direct costs of care.
  • Increase land supply.
  • Improve the process for zoning and development approvals.
  • Increase Government investment in home care for seniors communities.

There is also Plan B which would see consumers who can afford to pay contribute more for their accommodation and daily living expenses, while the Government continues to pay for the care component of home and residential care. With the Budget due in May and an aged care summit proposed for Parliament next month, will these reforms be on the Government’s agenda?
