Two years after a rezoning and development application was launched for a new land lease community, the local council wants to introduce a conservation barrier.
It was in 2020 that GTH Resorts, acting for GemLife, proposed to put a $74 million 230-home land lease community on 56.36ha of land on the NSW Far North Coast.
The application was lodged in June 2020 and a ‘deemed refusal’ appeal was lodged in the NSW Land & Environment Court in September 2020. In November 2021, the Land & Environment Court refused the development application.
Early this year, GTH Resorts agreed to a revised zoning suggestion but on 27 July Ballina Shire Council has voted unanimously to submit to rezone the site as a conservation land to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment for finalisation.
Residents living adjacent to the GemLife site were evacuated from homes during the 2022 floods.
