COVID-19 cases in residential care down 30% this week

Is the fifth COVID-19 wave coming to an end?
The number of COVID-19 cases among aged care residents was down more than 30% last week, with 1,906 residents testing positive to the virus.
Staff cases fell 38% to 644 and COVID-19 deaths were also down 38%, at 38 in the last week.

For the period 1 January 2022 to 12 June 2023, COVID-19 was the cause of 5.2% of all aged care deaths.
Since the beginning of the Omicron outbreak in mid-December 2021 until 12 June 2023, there have been 92,421 deaths in residential aged care, of which 5.2% were due to COVID-19.
Despite these numbers, only 52% of eligible aged care residents are fully vaccinated.
