Extend uncapped working hours for student visa holders, sector demands

The aged care sector is calling on the Government to delay capping the amount student visa holders can work, as the sector is dependent on the workers and is struggling to find enough staff. Workers on student visas were able to work an unlimited amount during the pandemic, but will be capped at 48 hours per fortnight when the cap resumes on 1 July 2023.

Catholic Health Australia told The Sydney Morning Herald that at least 10% of its workforce are student visa holders, of whom 40% work more than 48 hours a fortnight.

Aged and Community Care Providers Association CEO Tom Symondson told The Sydney Morning Herald they would like to see a six-month extension to existing conditions.
