Is Council’s open land invitation available to retirement living and land lease operators?

For the past week, Retirement Living Council Executive Director Daniel Gannon has been spruiking the fact retirement living is affordable.

Moreton Bay Regional Council, the country’s third largest local government area and fifth fastest growing, which is 30km from Brisbane’s CBD, has decided to lease its land for social, affordable and crisis housing land partnerships, calling it an Australian first.

“We’re already waiving 100% of all development fees and infrastructure charges in 15 suburbs, in a radical attempt to incentivise private sector construction of affordable social housing,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.

“A key to getting new social and affordable housing is availability of land, so Moreton Bay Council voted to help remove that hurdle by putting our own land on the market.

“Our aim is to have a couple of sites out for expressions of interest before Christmas, that’s how quickly we want to move.”

The rough definition of Social and Affordable housing is:

Social and affordable housing is rental housing for members of the community who may not be able to afford to rent in the general market. Affordable housing is for very low to moderate income households.
