“Nearable” aged care sleep sensor finalist for innovation award

An Australian “smart bedding” sleep sensor technology for aged care residents is in the running for an innovation award. The REMi sensor by Victoria-based Sleeptite has been named a finalist in the Digital Health and Health Tech category of the InnovationAus 2022 Awards for Excellence. REMi, described as a “nearable” system, uses soft sensors integrated into bedding to monitor a resident’s “presence, position and posture” as they sleep, and relay that data to a remote dashboard. Cameron van den Dungen, Chief Executive of Sleeptite, said this technology is a better solution than more invasive options like thermal cameras, microphones, wearables, or staff “door checks”.
“There’s a lack of technology to non-invasively monitor the wellbeing of the elderly, at home or in a facility, through the course of each night. “This is a global problem and one that very few companies are actively working to solve. Importantly, being nearable, REMi has virtually no cultural barriers to overcome,” he told InnovationAus.
The award winners will be announced on 17 November.
