The Federal Department of Health and Aged Care has issued updated guidance on medication management with a focus on residential aged care. The new guiding principles follow a review by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care in concert with the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.

According to Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Aged Care (pictured), more than 80 peak organisations and experts were consulted during the process.

“The Government is strongly committed to making sure medicines are used safely and in a way that improves the health and wellbeing of all Australians. “The guiding principles will play a key role in shaping future medication management practices in aged care, for the benefit of patients,” he said.

The updated guidelines are available from the Department of Health and Aged Care website.
