Internationally qualified nurses are spending up to $10,000 and waiting 12 to 18 months to register to practise in Australia, deterring many working in aged care from pursuing the necessary exams and costs to work as Registered Nurses.

Australia is expected to be short around 85,000 nurses by 2025, yet overseas trained nurses are being asked to spend thousands of dollars and wait up to 18 months to qualify as Registered Nurses. Among a range of hurdles to qualify, candidates must sit a three-and-a-half hour clinical simulation exam at the Adelaide Health Simulation in South Australia.
