Residents of a retirement village on Victorian Government-owned land in Warragul, Gippsland, have won a year-long battle to be allowed to sell their homes if they choose.

The residents of Warragul Gardens, which doubles as a holiday park under a long-term lease, found out last year that under a 2019 policy change – which directed managers of parks on Crown land to “ensure no new long-term occupants move in” – they would not be allowed to sell homes and residence rights.

A meeting of Baw Baw Shire Council, which manages the land, unanimously voted to allow the residents to sell; Mayor Michael Leaney (pictured) added that Council would take the matter to the State Government after the upcoming Victorian election.

“There will be no doubt that this council will be making representations to whoever is in government to get the policy amended – probably removed – and actually create ongoing surety.

“Do not think that tonight is the end of it, because it’s not, it will continue on – but I don’t want you to worry… we have your backs,” he said.
