Retirement village takes up seed bombing to replenish areas devastated by bushfire

Catholic Healthcare’s The Haven village in Wagga Wagga has taken a proactive approach to protect the village from future blazes after fires tore through the area in late 2019 and early 2020.

Residents have made 1,000 seed bombs – a mixture of compost, soil, seed and clay dried into balls –which will be donated to Landcare and WIRES Wildlife Rescue and disperses across a nearby area the size of 10 football fields.

Once it rains, the clay coating dissolves and the seeds will then begin to germinate and grow into native trees and plants.

Bushfires are a major threat to retirement villages, which often only have a single access road in the event of an evacuation.
