SDA provider assists aged care homes to transition younger residents with disabilities

A Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) provider has launched a project to aid aged care operators in transitioning younger residents with disabilities out of RAC and into suitable housing. Hume Community Housing, as well as Northcott Disability Services, are working with aged care organisations and NDIS Coordinators to free up aged care beds and better assist people with disabilities through the Younger People in Residential Aged Care (YPIRAC) Project. The YPIRAC Project is gathering data on the needs of younger people in aged care while offering free education and solutions to providers and residents on transferring to SDA housing. According to Scott Phillips, Senior Manager, Housing for People with Disability at Hume, the project aims to help move the estimated 3,400 younger Australians in RAC homes into proper SDA housing.

“The NDIS is complex, as is navigating SDA housing. We are simplifying the process by educating aged care providers, families and guardians, and NDIS Support Co-ordinators. “We identify suitable SDA options that are tailored to the younger person’s needs, as well as explaining what the customer’s transition journey to a new home with us might look like,” he said.

For more information, RAC providers should contact Renee Marshall, Disability Housing Engagement Coordinator at Hume on 0491 695 001, or email renee.marshall@humehousing.com.au to set up an information session.
