The Western Australian Government Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage lists “all current applications”. There are nine pages on its website but not one of the development applications is for senior living, be it retirement living or a co-location retirement living and aged care complex. Retirement Living Council Executive Director Daniel Gannon said legislation that guides the Retirement Villages Act in WA is currently being reviewed. “If the State Government continues to ignore industry concerns about various legislative components, it will have a dampening impact on investor appetite and the supply pipeline at the worst possible time,” he said.
“Getting regulation right is a delicate balance, because it can either stimulate the development of more communities or apply a handbrake to them. “Given the number of people aged over 65 will increase by more than 50% over the next 20 years, we need to make developing age-friendly communities easier, not harder.”
Not For Profit Advance Housing is proposing to build 19 affordable and social housing units in Albany, the port city 408km from Perth, at a cost of $21.72 million. Grandton Applecross, wholly owned by the directors of premium apartment developers, Norup + Wilson, is under construction. It will offer retirement living and residential care under the one roof where all apartments are 100% strata titled ownership with no exit fees payable.
