A historic homestead in Canberra could become host to a new retirement village and aged care development under plans by developer Urbanistik. The 36-hectare Gungahlin Homestead estate, which has served as a wildlife research station for the CSIRO since 1953, will be developed with a mix of independent living units, high-care units, and low-maintenance apartments under Urbanistik’s plan, with the homestead itself being restored and repurposed as a community building.

“We’re at the start of the process where we’re really just exploring ‘is the use appropriate’, but it is a 36-hectare site in total, so we would be seeing it as being a substantive retirement community,” Urbanistik general manager Clare Gilligan told the Canberra Times.

Urbanistik held a consultation session at the site on 19 November, and anticipates submitting a proposal to the National Capital Authority early next year.
