The number of nurses working in US aged care homes has dropped by 11.5% since the beginning of the pandemic in February 2020. The 11.5% drop equates to 182,000 positions within the sector, according to figures from Not-For-Profit research institute Altraum’s Health Sector Economic Indicators report. In comparison, the wider health care sector only saw a 3.5% drop in in its workforce numbers. Meanwhile, spending in the aged care sector since January 2020 also saw a drop of 7.9% while home health care increased by 4.5%. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 147,000 aged care residents in the United States have died from COVID-19.
