The 51-year-old man burnt down the unit at the Bacchus Marsh Retirement Living village, causing $200,000 in damages and sending two residents to hospital with minor injuries, on Australia Day this year. Police say the village’s manager had called Ballarat psychiatric services with concerns about the man in the days before the fire – highlighting the demands that are sometimes placed on village managers. The man, who reportedly suffers from anxiety and schizophrenia, now has new accommodation at a Ballarat facility.
