Victoria chalks up 14 days with no new cases and deaths as state prepares for ‘ring of steel’ to be lifted

A milestone in Victoria on Friday, as the state officially passed two weeks with no new coronavirus cases reported.

There were just three active cases state wide, as the 14-day rolling average dropped to 0.

No new deaths meant the state’s toll remained at 819 (90% of the national total).

There were over 12,000 Victorians were tested in the 24 hours prior too.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the test numbers were truly impressive, and key to any action for the state moving forwards.

“The aim is to have as low a number as possible and be able to stop the spread of this virus as we take safe and cautious steps to open up,” he said.

‘Ring of steel’ to be lifted

Tomorrow will be the first opportunity that many Melburnians have to visit regional Victoria, but Premier Andrews urged those leaving the big smoke to maintain COVID-safe behaviour.

“Go and enjoy regional Victoria, go and spend in regional Victoria, but you've got to do it in a safe way,” Mr Andrews said.

“I don't want this weekend to be one of only a few weekends where people have that freedom, I want it to be part of that COVID-normal.”
