The combination of not enough aged care beds being built to meet increasing demand and government policy to support care delivery in the home will inevitably result in retirement village staff facing increased aggression from advanced aged residents.
Consider this: a survey released last month by the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association found that 90% of aged care staff had suffered resident aggression ranging from verbal abuse, kicking and hitting.
Nearly 30% said they witnessed resident to staff abuse at least once a week.
The Australian Catholic University survey 269 nurses and 2014. 36% reported that they had been physically assaulted in the past five shifts.
In our experience few village operators have procedures in place both to manage aggressive residents both compassionately and responsibly, or to support their staff.
