Well-played Facebook!

“You need to assume that organic reach will eventually arrive at zero” – Facebook 2007: Thanks Facebook! These ‘fan pages’ are a great way for our business to target our audience. And it’s free! 2014: Facebook? I have 10,000 followers but since your new algorithm update I’ve only been reaching about 650 people per post. 2016: FACEBOOK!! Since your recent algorithm to prioritise family and friend content our organic reach has dropped even lower to only 2%! I ask the question … Is Facebook: a) Just trying to do the best thing by their users? b) Intentionally depleting our organic reach so we are forced to pay? In my opinion – it's a little of both. No one wants their news feed to be flooded with posts from businesses just because they have thousands of followers and are prolifically publishing, however, as a marketer I do believe we have the right to feel cheated. Facebook became an integral part of our promotional strategy – we were achieving extraordinary reach for little or no budget. We were hooked! Then, along comes new algorithms and we see this reach diminishing. Facebook sees this happening and sends us notifications telling us to ‘boost’ our posts to reach more people (the same number of people we used to) and … just like that, Facebook is a paid platform. Well-played Facebook, well-played. So, what do we do now? Get selective – stop posting numerous times per day and focus more on getting as many interactions from one post as possible. Video, video, video – native Facebook videos have 186% higher engagement rate. You'd be forgiven for thinking that Facebook was becoming a video platform. Facebook is a paid platform – start treating it for what it is. And get your targeting right! Facebook provides a quick video tutorial on how and why to set up your target audience.
